Booking Through Thursday asks this week:
It’s my Dad’s birthday today, which makes me wonder … do you like to give books as gifts?
I’m usually torn. I love giving and sharing books, but it can be hard. The giftee can be difficult to please, or you don’t know what they’ve read (or what they thought of books they have read). Even people who love to read and love to get books can be hard to gift books to … so, does that make you pause and reach for the neckties or DVDs or sweaters … anything BUT a book at gift-giving time? How do you feel about getting books yourself? Are you picky or easy? (For the record, I’m told I’m VERY hard to buy for, even though I’ll read just about anything … go figure.

I also love giving and sharing books, and have found it hard to know what has been read or wanted.
My solution, is to give a gift card to the books stores or eBook sites they tend to frequent. This way they can get exactly what they want, and will usually let me know what they got, or even lend to me when they finish.
This also the way I usual get book gifts, as though I read most anything except romance, it is hard to know whether I have already read a book, or already have it to read in one form or another.
The exception is my Mom. I take her to the library every other Wednesday, so she can get eight or ten large print books. Large print only, since her eyesight has gotten so bad.
Once, my wife and I were at our library and they had large print books for ten cents apiece, so we bought all they had at the time (over fifty), and brought them up to Mom. She had already read about half of the books, but keeps the others in reserve, just in case she can’t get to the library. The ones she has read then go the church thrift shop, or the clubhouse where Mom lives, so others with limited vision can then read them.

How do you feel about giving books as gifts, and/or do you have any other ideas to make book giving easier or more relevant to the giftee?
